Oh my Gosh. I’m praying we don’t get sick. Since eating only homemade food, and not even out of boxes except for some rice couscous and pasta, I sometimes feel like I’ve been on a roller coaster ride. I eat one packaged food by accident and have headaches and am irritable. I eat things made in the same facility as wheat and I get sick. I’ve found out I’ve been gluten intolerant my whole life, quite possibly, and my relationship with food has completely changed.
And today I did what? I ate fast food???
Am I out of my mind? It’s taken months to get Ada healthy!
And our bodies seem to work together, we get sick at the same times from foods, which is why it probably all goes back to gluten making us sick.
Today I went to the mall. Eating out used to be big for us. Huge. Azita misses it.
There was a “Five Guys Burgers and Fries” in the food court and she said she was hungry. I had read about them and they cut the potatoes themselves and don’t fry anything else but those fresh cut potatoes, so gluten-free peeps like that.
Restaurant french fries very very often have wheat starch on them. yeah, just another thing that “should” be gluten free, but isn’t.
So I scrounged up some quarters and got Azita some fries. She was so excited. So very excited.
I had already figured I’d just let her eat them, or maybe have one fry.
The guy comes to give us the order, and says “hey, you got two little ones with you? Hold on.”
And comes back with two huge soft drinks and an entire bag full of fries. A bag full. Like, the whole bag that fits two burgers and two fries in.
And he looks at me, and says, “hey, anytime you come up here, free refills for you. Always. Don’t hesitate.”
What???? Oh my gosh. I know I let my kids where play clothes all the time, but are we looking that Oliver Twist? Or was he hitting on me?
Either way, Azita. You should have seen those eyes. A big “strawberry” juice for her. Probably like a fruit punch. Either way, something we never ever eat in this family. Not even on occassion. Well, we drink it one occassion now!
She was so excited about her treats. She wanted to eat there. We sat down and Ada got some fries too. It was just too hard to fight it after the guy gave us all that. I let Ada have a sip of the fruit punch and tossed it out so we’d be safe from any high fructose stuff in that. And I’m not demonizing anyone else that has it, it’s just that Ada has a VERY sensitive stomach and I do too now, and I don’t want to cause us an icky few days over something that I don’t even crave.
If I’m gonna be sick, I’ll pick my poison!
I let Azita have a few fries and a few sips and then told her we’d have the rest at home to keep Ada out of most of it.
Also, the fries are fried in refined peanut oil. Me and her haven’t had fried food in a refined oil in…. emm…. well, never for her!
And the fact that the guys handle burger buns and gluten crumbs and its conceivable we get some.
okay, so my tummy’s turning now. Is the stress or the fries?? I’ll let you know.
The adventure with food continues for us. Won’t be trialing in any new foods this week, because then I won’t know if its that food or this one.
